Q: “The players that you admired as a young man, were they people that made you feel good? Is that and essential thing? There are some who can present wonderful challenges in the music but it’s not fun to listen to…”

A: “Oh, there’s a lot of musicians that I marvel at. Yes, but with their technique and yeah, I find myself not playing like their song [ph] … because emotions play a big part of it, you know, like Roy Eldridge. Now, Roy Eldridge, he hit one note and it can knock me out. Yeah, just a little buzz and the sound.”
