Q: “Were you among the first playing electric? Did you go right to electric or acoustic, originally?”
A: Tal Farlow: “When I heard Charlie Christian, I went right to it actually. Because he played the first one I ever heard and it was darn near the first one that was heard. I think Eddie Durham may have recorded the ...”
Interview: “With Floyd Smith, I think.”
Tal Farlow: “Yeah, yeah, but that was really the time of the first electric guitar.”
Interview: “In the late 30s.”
Tal Farlow: “And yeah, and what struck me about it was it had such a different sound and, of course, the thing was that up until that time you were a part of the rhythm section and my solo is only if you had access to a microphone and everybody stayed real quiet and the drummer cooperated. Where you're not going to be heard at all, you know, but with that amplifier, I mean, I heard Charlie was right up front with Georgie Hall and Cootie Williams and then, you know, the trumpet and the saxophone and that, you know, that was ... it seemed to me like a mighty stride forward.”
