Q: “I had one guy tell me once that the problem with being an accompanist is that you never play the melody because you never learn the melody really properly! You hear them [other players] do it but you’ve never played it – you’ve always played around it and behind them. I don’t hear that in your playing, you seem to know where it is and where you’re going…”
A: “Well, I learned when to play the melody and not play the melody whenever it's necessary, you know. Sometimes playing with various combos and being a member of the rhythm section, I don't play the melody. So for years, unless I go out of my way to really learn the melodies, especially on some of the old bebop tunes, I never play the melody.”
