Q: “There is some Oscar [Peterson] in your playing but you obviously didn’t stay a long time being influenced by him…”

A: “Well, as soon as I got to Memphis, you know, I was in an environment where all of the young students, you know, were into the more contemporary players, you know. And up until that time, I had been practically closed minded, you know. I mean, I really loved Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and those kind of people, Art Tatum. They didn't want to hear anything modern, you know. They just didn't hear it, you know. Although I always like McCoy Tyner, you know, like the early McCoy Tyner for some reason, I don't know, maybe it was his dexterity or whatever it was.”
