Q: “Is [jazz] something you learn or is it something somebody can actually sit down and say ‘OK, this is jazz and you do this and you do that and that’s what makes it jazz’; or is like being out there and doing it and learning yourself?”

A: Lee Konitz: “I think all we can do is guide people to the great players so they can hear what it really is and give them some of the theoretical materials that go into making up a song.”
