[discussing playing the flugelhorn versus the trumpet]
Q: “More and more people are getting to that, aren’t they? You know, Freddie Hubbard plays it [the flugelhorn] so much and Clark Terry so much that it’s a warmer and more intimate horn for soloing, for you know, expression…”

A: “I think for a lot of musical styles, it definitely is more appropriate and the thing I found was the blend that you can get with the flugelhorn and another instrument that's coming from the same direction like a soprano or a flute. A trumpet has the edge that a flute and a soprano has, and that was one of the reasons I enjoyed playing flugelhorn, too, because I think it was more adaptable depending with other things. I think there are those people who play the flugelhorn, unfortunately, and sound like they're playing a trumpet because they don't respect the instrument for what it is or approach it knowing that it is a flugelhorn, it's not a trumpet and it isn't meant to scream and it isn't meant ... You can over blow the instrument very easily, so some people sound like the ... They get the sound out of the flugelhorn that's somewhere between the trumpet and the flugelhorn. And that was the same problem I was having when I was dealing with trying to play both. Where when I put one down and picked the other one up, the sound I got in both of them was somewhere in the middle and I wasn't really doing anything for either.”
