Q: “Let’s talk about your writing – would you have learned a lot from Benny Golson? He was around and writing a lot when you were in that band [Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers]…”

A: “Yes, I learned. So I might learn more about writing for that sax group from JJ because he was first. I was with him first. By the time I got…(word not clear), I have to skip over Benny because Benny had a way of not really encouraging your writing. He was exclusive with his writing and if you didn't sound like that, he wasn't truly interested in it. So what he did was, he made me write more for other people. I couldn't get it played in that group. There was no way I could get it played.”
