A: “Who were some of the influences when you were growing up, because your area’s Detroit which was a particularly strong area when you were just a young fella playing around. There was just an incredible wealth of talent in the late forties and early fifties in the Detroit area. Were you listening to local players?”
Q: “I listen to local players for that. You know, my hero very early on was Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson. Because I heard them because some of the first music in my house was early Billie Holiday records with Teddy and the early Art Tatum’s on the Decca label, you know, Sweet Lorraine Analogy, you know.”
