Q: “When did Mingus come into the band?”
A: “Well, when we came back from Hawaii, we worked a short time at the ... we had Red Kelly on bass then, and Red had been with Charlie Barnet's Band and he had a lot of friends on the band and he decided he wanted to go back with them, so Red told me, he said he knows this great bassist in San Francisco, you know … And I said call him up and he came down. I understand he was carrying mail at the time, so I got ... I think he was with Lionel Hampton before that in a big band and so he came down and then we used to rehearse a lot, you know, and maybe two or three afternoons a week, we'd be at Red's house rehearsing and most of the time playing at night, too. Around Beverly Hills, there were a lot of restaurants that, you know, had a trio maybe. Some of them had trios, some of them had maybe just a piano, but it was a kind of a work where you could just go in and stay for weeks and weeks.”
