Q: “You spent quite a bit of time in Europe; in fact the beginnings of your singing career were in Europe, weren’t they?”

A: “I lived there ten years and the last five I lived in London. I went there when I decided to try singing. I really didn't want to come back to America. At that time, it was a very troubled time for America. I was just a kid and I didn't know it was going to get better. I thought it would just get worse and worse and for a while it did just get worse and worse with riots and Watergate and everything. And I knew ... I was living in Rome at that time, I wanted to go someplace where people would understand the lyrics that I sang. Because I wasn't happy just doing jazz standards of people, bass and street blues and stuff, which Italian musicians play. So it was between Amsterdam and London and I just decided I would try London. I knew that if were really going to pursue a career in singing I would end up in New York.:
