Q: “So it wasn’t like a big emotional thing to join Ellington?”

A: “No, not at all. Not at all. I was looking at it from the standpoint of survival because I figured it was time for me to... because between the time I got out of the Army and the time I joined the band, you know, I had a lot of time to do and think and flounder around and do this and do that and try this and try that and work at all kinds of different groups and, you know, gigs and whatever. I sort of freelancing, that's what I was doing. That is what you call freelancing.”
