Q: “When you decided to get out of medicine, which of course is a wonderful thing for a son to do – to be a doctor, and become a jazz musician; was the family perturbed? Great sacrifice on their part I’m sure for you to go there…”

A: “It was very upsetting for them. I mean, they thought that they're going to have a doctor in the family and of course, they had, you know, worked very hard to that end. Education in my house was very, very important. Neither my mother nor father had the opportunity to graduate even from high school because they had to get out there in the world and make a buck.”
