Transcription

Q: “Montreal was a city divided - French and English – even in those days, as to the jazz community, and white and black as well so it was actually an occasion where they got together more than usual when Bird was there because they all held him up to be their idol, right?”

A: Mark Miller: “Sure, there was a kind of magnetic draw there. People would put aside whatever differences there were. I don't know that there were differences out in the open. It just seemed that there were various lines of demarcation that you could almost draw out on the map of the city.”

Interviewer: “Oh, yeah?”

Mark Miller: “Below Dorchester, you're into the St. Antoine area, which was where the Black community lived. If you go east past St. Liboire, you're in the French community.”
