Q: “Your dad had a music shop so music is probably the only thing you ever considered, I would imagine – or did you ever think of being a lawyer or doctor or anything else?”

A: “Oh, always music. It's interesting, Ted, in that when dad brought us up, by the time I was thirteen years old, I knew ever aria from every opera. The way he gave it to us, it was like ... he said, "Okay, you want to learn music?" And he said, "If you do, then let's be thorough." He said, "If you're going to be a mathematician, then you should be a thorough one. If you're going to be a janitor, be a good one.” You know, and that's the way we were brought up. So he knew all of us, four boys and four girls, were all interested in music. We worked in the music store. We taught in the music store and music was our life, you know.”
