Q: “The whole time you were doing something like the Tonight Show, it was the best of that kind of work wasn’t it? You were working with fine musicians…”

A: “It was the best with that kind of work, but it was just a job and it was good because, you know, it gave me something, you know, I wasn't starving. At least, I was playing my instrument, but I always had a dream. No matter what I was doing, that wasn't my life. That was just something to do and I always had a dream of just playing jazz and not doing anything.”
