Q: “You’re originally from the east coast but probably a lot of your fame came from a lot of time out west with the big band but now you’ve moved back to New York – yourself and Toshiko are back in the Big Apple again. Why did you move back?”

A: Lew Tabackin: “Well, when I first moved to Los Angeles, it didn't take me long to realize it. It really wasn't what I had envisioned when I moved to Los Angeles. I didn't particularly care for that environment. There is no real jazz community that … very little real jazz music. “

Interviewer: “There is very little of a community either now.”

Lew Tabackin: “Yeah.”

Interviewer: “Because it's all just spread out so far.”

Lew Tabackin: “That's really ... so I couldn't move back, but I figured … basically what happened I tried to turn a negative into a positive, so I had time and energy and we started some projects and that's how the band was born.”
