Q: “Tell me about the situation for you now in Britain. I know that your time isn’t completely given over to playing – you do play quite regularly – but for many years now you’ve presented a regular BBC program playing records…”

A: “Yeah, well, people sometimes say to me, "What do you regard your main job as being now?" And I always say to them, "Well, put it this way that if my number comes up and it's time for me to go at any time in the next 25 years, I intend that I shall drop down on stage, trumpet in hand, and not slumped over a typewriter or in front of a microphone.”
