Q: “Have you been doing a lot of solo playing?”
A: Hod O'Brien: “In recent years, yeah, the last three years, maybe I would say I've been concentrating on solo playing partly out of necessity, partly from preference. Because I do want to develop as a solo player and I think that it's, especially for piano players, it's a great outlet, a great style to be able to develop because piano has so much... you know, it's so rich with possibilities that ...”
Interviewer: “It's an orchestra. Everything is there.”
Hod O'Brien: “It's the orchestra.”
Interviewer: “Yeah.”
Hod O'Brien: “It can be the orchestra.”
Interviewer: “Yeah.”
Hod O'Brien: “And that's what I'm trying to do with it now. I've been an ensemble player for thirty years and I love it, but you know, I think what turned me on to solo playing finally was when I started listening to Dave McKenna about beginning of 1980s, I used to ... we'd go catch him at Han Riley's when he come there and he really knocked me out.”
