Q: “Are you more or less comfortable in the live performance, whether it’s a club or a concert? Is there much difference? You know, does a club thing where the people are four feet away from you any different from being on stage in a concert hall, or is it just the fact that the audience is there?”

A: Herb Ellis: “The easiest...”

Interviewer: “Because you saying that...”

Herb Ellis: “Oh, yeah, and I do a lot of each right now, yeah. The easiest way is in a club when they're right there on top of you because you get the communication ’tween audience and performer is vital. It's vital in a good performance, you know, and the people are right on top of you, and you can feel the input that they're giving to this performance. And also in a club, you play maybe two times, three times a night, so it's very loose. Now, I like the concerts, too. They're not quite as intimate, but it's still live. There is no recording there, so it's still loose enough, but the thing about that is as you go out and you've got one shot at it. Or usually, you know, if it's a concert, usually, you've got half of it, you know. You've got an hour to do it and I sort of like that.”
