Q: “Talking about the length of a beat, and theoretically a beat occurs – bang, bang, bang…on the quarter note and it’s there and Jerry Fuller was mentioning the same thing about – it takes a long time til you sort of realize that a quarter note can be a foot wide, and you can be anywhere within that and as long as you’re together…”

A: “It's wherever you determine to put that beat, you know, to put it in the sequence of the time frame or the rhythmic frame. And that's what we had to nail it down with Oscar and Ray and myself, and we all ... we finally found out where we wanted it, which is what gave it the feeling that the trio had, I think, you know. And we put it a little higher up, so to speak, than some people do. That's why it always gave you the feeling of urgency and that sometimes people didn't want to sit still. I mean, it did something to them, you know.”
