Q: “You mention Oliver Jones – well, Oliver came back and really started his career as a jazz musician only in the last ten years, and he did that in Canada for the most part; Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and then sort of moved internationally…”

A: “Well, my favorite story about what's wrong with the Canadian attitude involves Rick Wilkins. I had a guy who came down to visit me in New York from here and he told me about, in another context entirely, he told me that there was a marvelous arranger from Hamilton. Since I'm from Hamilton, my instant reflex was, "If he is from Hamilton, he can't be very good."
