Q: “I remember Oscar [Peterson] telling me a long time ago something about being embarrassed on occasion while traveling and playing a soiree at an American embassy and being introduced and taking the ambassador aside and saying ‘excuse me, but I’m not an American…”

A: “Well, there's a thing that happens to us as Canadians in the arts, it's like my song 'Quiet Nights' with Jobim. I've heard that when somebody said something about a lovely American song like this. And that's not an American song, that's a Canadian-Brazilian. That's a Canadian-Brazilian song.”
