Q: “It must have been a conscious decision to not go out on the road because I’m sure you must have had lots of offers from guys coming through town…”
A: “Yeah, I did. Art Blakey, at one point, wanted me to join the Messengers and a lot of my friends thought that I was a fool to turn him down, but then a lot of other friends said, "No, you've made the right decision." For many reasons, which I won't go in to, but the main reason, the prime reason was that my kids were little and I wanted to be home while they were growing up. And since I was working steadily in Chicago and had no problem staying employed, the temptation to go on the road wasn't as great.”
