Q: “One of your favourite piano players is Bill Evans?”

A: “Right. Bill and I became friends in '52. He was in the army stationed in Chicago, The Fifth army band. And he used to come into a club, I'm trying to remember the name of it now, the Streamliner Lounge, which was down on Clinton and Madison and he'd come in in uniform wearing his khakis and sit in with the local guys there and that's how we met.”
