Q: “You did work with people such as Sidney Bechet when you were a young man. What did he require of you? As a leader, would he come up to you and say ‘hey kid, do this and this and this’; or did he just let you play?”

A: Dick Wellstood: “No, he'd let you know if he didn't like what you were doing, but it was you- "Don't play them modern chords” or you know what I mean, “Don't play so loud.” or “Don't play so soft.” or whatever it might have been.”

Interviewer: “Or whatever.”

Dick Wellstood: “And other than that, you know, it seemed to make him happy, I worked quite a bit with him, but he never told me what to do. He told me what not to do, that's all.”
