Q: “You do have to have certain standards that you know will work with any rhythm section, right?”

A: Clark Terry: “Sure, you have to.”

Interviewer: “Right.”

Clark Terry: “And you have to be fair about it if you have to realize that you're going to be working with people that are not your employees, you know, and they're going to be there when you're gone and they might have a hand in saying whether or not you're going to be back again while they're still there. So you have to take all these things into consideration. You don't want to embarrass anybody and at the same time, you want to keep a good enough program in mind to establish a kind of rapport between audience and the bandstand that keeps it and makes it a swinging evening for everybody involved.”
