Q: “You’re very young and you have a career that’s been underway for some years; your background is that originally your dad is a music fan, right? You just grew up with it all around you…”
A: “That's right, and ever since I can remember, there was always some kind of jazz recording on and, or music of some kind anyways. And jazz was like a second language around our household, and you know, my father would come in from work and the first thing would happen ... or we were driving around, there was always music on. And my older brother, Richard, who is 25 plays trumpet and we made some records together when I was younger. And he really introduced me directly to the music of guys like Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk, Miles and Art Blakey and Charlie Parker. And when I heard Byrd, you know, that was really it and I went with that for a long time. I got serious about the saxophone that was sitting beneath my bed collecting dust, you know, except for on Wednesdays when I'd take it to school for my class lesson, you know.”
