Q: “Your own quartet, as you say, in about ’54 or ’55 became very popular – you as a leader. I can’t conceive of you really as being of a leader’s temperament though. Did you have the strength to say to somebody ‘you’re in and you’re out’ and ‘we’ve gotta do it this way’ and to be a boss? You’re a very gentle person…”

A: “I don’t like to hurt people and say they’re not capable of this or that, but it does ... if you have a strong enough feeling for the way you think it has to be, then you have to do that or you try to do it in the most gentle way possible and you get someone that you feel is better qualified. It’s a very difficult thing and a lot of people end up hating you for it, you know. You’re right, it’s not my … it’s really not my temperament to be in show business at all.”
