Q: "It sounds very glamourous 'on the road' but glamourous it isn't, is it?"

A: “I hadn't. Not at all, but many people think, "Oh, I'd love to do so." I remember the years when we'd have the big Greyhound bus with Basie. And everybody was married, you know, some of the wives said, "I'm going to make this … all of this tour, maybe we'd have 32 one-nighters." After about the fourth night the following night, they'd be looking haggard, "I think I’m gonna go back home." Is what it was said that would go through the wives, you know, you see. They couldn't stand it over four or five nights. It was funny, but you kind of get used to all of those things. And one time, we were traveling so much, I couldn't sleep when I'd come home.”
