Biography
WOODY SHAW(trumpeter, bandleader) was born on December 24, 1944 in Laurinburg, North Carolina and passed away May 10, 1989 . New Jersey raised Shaw’s early influences included Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie and Eric Dolphy – later recording and performing with Dolphy in the 1960s. During this period he also worked with Horace Silver, Max Roach and Art Blakey and later, in the 1970s as bandleader. Shaw earned high praise from even the notoriously critical Miles Davis. The Grammy nominated Shaw, remained active recording and performing into the 1980’s until a tragic subway accident severed his left arm. He passed away mere months afterward.
