Stuart Broomer
Biography
STUART BROOMER (pianist) led the Stuart Broomer Quartet (with saxophonists Bill Smith and Maury Coles, and drummer John Mars) when they performed in a ‘Sound of Toronto Jazz’ Concert on April 4, 1977. Respected today as a journalist whose articles and reviews of jazz and blues recordings are often seen in magazines and on music websites, pianist Broomer and drummer John Mars first teamed up with Bill Smith as Broomer, Mars, & Smith in the mid ‘70s, later becoming simply Stuart Broomer & John Mars when Smith left the group at the end of the decade.
The duo toured extensively on the university circuit throughout Eastern Canada, Michigan, and New York beginning in 1979, and recorded their debut album, Annihilated Surprise (on the Mars-owned Ugly Dog label) In 1983. They disbanded the duo in 1986, with both players resuming solo performing and recording careers.
