Stan Fomin
Biography
STAN FOMIN (pianist, composer) was born in the Ukraine, where he classically trained in piano, music theory and composition, and in 1967, obtained a Masters Degree in Music. Upon emigrating to Canada in 1998, he rounded out his musical education studying contemporary film scoring and production with Glenn Morley at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, shortly thereafter joining the Guild of Canadian Film Composers and beginning to work as a film and TV composer. He has scored music for Alliance Atlantis, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Nelvana, YTV, Barna-Alper Productions, and 529 Films, and is currently (2008) studying Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Fomin’s performing career has taken him all over the world as a pianist and band leader. Since arriving in Canada in the late ‘90s, he has collaborated and shared stages with the Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Warren Hill, Jeff Golub, Paul Brown, Najee, Demo Cates, Sharon Lee Williams, Eddie Bullen, Liberty Silver, Chris Smith, Paul Christopher, Mark Kelso, Andrew Scott, Sasha Boychouk, Vickie Van Dyke, Rich Brown, Steve Heathcote, Loi Bartolomuchi, Frank Botos, Bob Brough, Arty Ross, Terry Clarke, Jim Vivian, and others. For the past six years, he has been part of respected jazzman Bob Brough's band, performing with him as part of the Bob Brough/Stan Fomin Quartet (Chris Jennings on bass, Mark Adam on drums) in the “Sound of Toronto Jazz” Concert Series at the Ontario Science Centre on March 6, 2000.
His orchestrations and arrangements include audio arrangements for a variety of piano play-along books published by Hal Leonard, CD Classics Go Pop for Parry Music (BMG). two musicals -- The Forest Song and Little Prince for Nazarov National Theatre in Moscow – and arrangements for several independent artists in the U.S., Canada, and Russia.
Stan Fomin is Musical Director for Papaduke, a genre-defying fusion band led by violinist Vasyl Popadiuk blending traditional Slavic gypsy music with classic pop and jazz. The band released its first CD in 2006. Recently, he joined forces with well-known Smooth Jazz singer/saxophonist Demo Cates and together, they just (Spring 2008) released their debut album Cates Fomin Project: Journey With Us (Universal).

2007 – movie Secret Miracle. Fomin’s most recent film work. was honored with a Silver Remi Award at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival.
