Molly Johnson

Biography

MOLLY JOHNSON (vocalist, songwriter) Toronto born and raised, Johnson has been an entertainer since childhood, with training at the National Ballet School and performances in numerous musicals. Her distinctive smoky voice recalls an earlier era and has earned her critical and popular acclaim in Canada and France.

She has released fivealbums to date, including Lucky, which wona JUNO is 2009.  That same year, she was named “Female Jazz Vocalist of the Year” at the National Jazz Awards. Johnson was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007 in recognition of her philanthropic efforts as well as her contributions to Canada’s cultural scene.

In the Fall of 2014, Molly released Because of Billie, dedicated to Billie Holiday. The recording features saxophonists Colleen Allen and John Johnson, trumpeter Bryden Baird, pianist Robi Botos, bassist and arranger Mike Downes, and drummer Terry Clarke. The thirteen tracks include two penned by Holiday herself ("Fine and Mellow" and "God Bless the Child") and with proceeds going to the Bille Holiday Foundationto to help young people. The album was nominated for a 2015 JUNO in the Vocal Jazz Album category

As Johnson states, "this album is dedicated to my parents who lived and taught by example, to their generation and the generations before who have brought us to where we are today."
