MILT JACKSON (vibraphonist, composer) was born January 1, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan and passed away October9, 1999. Bebop era “Bags” as he was known was considered one of the finest of the jazz vibraphonists. Early associations with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie produced the group initially known as the Milt Jackson Quartet with Ray Brown, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke, then became the influential Modern Jazz Quartet. The MJQ had one of the lengthiest runs in jazz – over some five decades until 1997. An inventive and swinging performer, Jackson wrote a number of compositions, the most famous being “Bag’s Groove”.
