Biography
MICHEL LAMBERT (drummer, composer, arranger) was born October 24, 1959 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He is the descendant of a virtual dynasty of classical musicians in Quebec. After studying at the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec, his fascination with drums and composition inspired him to pursue his education at Berklee College in Boston. For a period of three years starting in 1983, he traveled to Los Angeles, Paris, New York, and Amsterdam.
Since 1982, several different different projects have taken him from coast-to-coast in Canada, to Europe, Asia, and the United States, appearing at notable festivals including the Berliner Jazztreff, Jazzfest Wien, Jak Jazz in Jakarta, Pori Jazz, l’Europa Jazz Festival du Mans, the Birmingham Jazz Festival, Internationales New Jazz Moers, Tampere Jazz Happening, Jazz Sardigna and many others. He has also recorded in several countries and performed with brilliant artists including Gary Burton, Dewey Redman, Barre Phillips, Paul Bley, Uri Caine, Gary Peacock, Mat Maneri Misha Mengelberg, Milcho Leviev, Sonny Greenwich, and Herbie Spanier.
An accomplished composer, in 1998 he wrote his "Journal des Episodes - 366 Episodes pour orchestre symphonique", a work which was performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 1992. As a visual artist, he was commissioned by Canada Council in 1996 to illustrate the packaging of the CD compilation of Canadian music to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. In 1998, with a grant from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, he was resident of the Studio du Québec in New York City. More recently, with the support of Canadian Foreign Affairs, he toured six European counries to introduce his Out Twice music project featuring Jeannette Lambert and Dave Young.
In 2004 he completed the five Double Duets, a series of drum and art duets with Daniel Humair, Han Bennink, Rakalam Bob Moses, Sven Ake Johansson, and John Heward. His latest recording project, Le Passant, features a score for orchestra and improvisers with Dominic Duval, Ellery Eskelin, and Malcolm Goldstein.
