Matt Herskowitz

Biography

Matt Herskowitz (pianist, composer) is originally from Albany, New York. A graudate of the Juilliard School (New York) and the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), Matt has made Montreal his adopted home since 1999. His work combines elements of the jazz, classical, and world music. He has released a number of acclaimed recordings and performed extensively. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous orchestras and soloists throughout North America.

In 2011, Matt released "Jerusalem Trilogy," which features original compositions and arrangements fusing contemporary jazz and classical styles, combined with a blend of Arab and Jewish musical styles and grooves. In addition to his jazz trio, the album features violinist Lara St. John, saxophonist/flutist Daniel Schnyder, and Bassam Saba on Nay and Oud.

Herskowitz released a solo piano album entitled "Matt Herskowitz Upstairs," in 2012. It was named “Solo album of the year” by Le Devoir (Montreal).

Matt is in the process of preparing a project for his next album, entitled “From Bach To Brubeck,” which will feature his own compositions and arrangements based on the music of both composers, as well as one of Dave Brubeck's great solo piano compositions
