MARK MURPHY (vocalist, lyricist) was born March 14, 1932 in Syracuse, N.Y. Considered one of the premier male jazz vocalists, the six time Grammy nominee is known as the “hipster’s hipster” – noted for his innovative vocalese and improvisations and his storied association with the “Beat” writers such as Jack Kerouac. Murphy has written lyrics for tunes by such artists as Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus and Wayne Shorter. Discovered by Sammy Davis Jr. , Murphy’s first release at age 24 was “Meet Mark Murphy”. Over his six decade career he has worked with many jazz greats including Clark Terry, Bill Evans, the Brecker Brothers, Benny Green and most recently fellow singers Kurt Elling, Jon Hendricks and Kevin Mahogany as part of the highly successful “Four Brothers” project.
