Jim Head

Biography

Jim Head (guitarist) was born in Alberta. After studying at McGill University and working for several years in Montreal, he has spent most of his professional career in Edmonton.

Jim has appeared on over thirty recordings, including two as a leader. His first album, Mind's Eye, was released in 2006. His second release, Zoetrope, features acclaimed Canadian pianist Chris Andrew as well as New York musicians John O'Gallagher on alto saxophone, Johannes Weidenmueller on bass, and Owen Howard  on drums. The album was nominated for a JUNO in 2015.

Jim has worked with such acclaimed jazz artists as Tim Hagans, Sheila Jordan, Eddie Daniels, Joel Miller, Kirk MacDonald, Lew Tabackin, Christine Jensen, David Braid, Kelly Jefferson, Mike Downes, Ralph Bowen, Myron Walden, P.J. Perry, Doug Riley, Dave Restivo, Andre White, Chet Doxas, Keiran Overs, Jane Bunnett, John Stetch, Chris Tarry, and Steve Slagle, among many others. He has performed across Canada, as well as China, Mexico, and the United States.

In addition to an extensive career as a performer, Jim is an assistant professor at MacEwan University, where he has been the guitar department head in the Jazz and Contemporary Music program since 2007.
