Hugh Fraser
Biography
HUGH FRASER (trombonist, pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader,educator, producer) Victoria native Fraser is known as a dynamic and versatile musician and a prolific and innovative composer/arranger. He formed the 13 piece Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation (VEJI) band in 1980 featuring such members as Phil Dwyer and Campbell Ryga and his own Hugh Fraser Quintet in 1986.
His recording career includes working with Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland . Honours include being the recipient of Trombonist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2006, two Juno awards and numerous nominations. A sought after clinician and educator, Fraser has also been awarded an honorary doctorate from McGill University.
