Horace Silver

Biography

HORACE SILVER (pianist, composer, bandleader) was born Horace War Martin Tavares Silver on September 2, 1928 in Norwalk, Connecticut. The illustrious composer, whose tunes have endured as standard jazz repertoire over some six decades, is also recognized for his deftly humourous and sometimes “funky” performance style. As co-founder of the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey, Silver had an influential role in the hard bop movement –contributing such classics as “The Preacher” and “Sister Sadie” . “Song for my Father” references his Cape Verdean roots and has even influenced rock musicians such as Steely Dan. As a band leader Silver also fostered the talents of Hank Mobley, Blue Mitchell and Louis Hayes. Silver’s legacy is as one of the true giants of jazz.
