Biography

GENE PUERLING (vocalist, arranger) was born March 31, 1929 in Wisconsin and passed away March 25, 2008. Innovative leader of the acappella group the Hi Lo’s in the 1950s, Puerling influenced such pop groups as The Beach Boys and Manhattan Transfer with his complex arrangements and harmonies. Following the breakup of the vocal group in 1964 and a period in the commercial industry, he formed the Singers Unlimited with Len Dresslar, Bonnie Herman and former Hi Lo Don Shelton in 1967, going on to record 14 albums. The Hi Lo’s reunited in the 1970s. In 1981, Puerling won a Grammy for his Manhattan Transfer arrangement, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” .
