Brandi Disterheft
Biography
Brandi Disterheft (bassist, composer) was born in North Vancouver. Brandi is considered one of the fastest rising stars in the jazz world. She began performing alongside her mother, pianist and organist Fran Jarre, in her teens and possesses a very unique rhythmic and physical style. She counts Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, and Bjork among her influences.
Brandi has studied with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Rufus Reid, Don Thompson, and Ron Carter. Her performances include opening for Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck and Chris Botti. Her travels have taken her throughout Europe, Asia and North America, including Carnegie Hall.
The great Oscar Peterson once said of Brandi, “she is what we call serious."
In 2010, Brandi recorded with Hank Jones and Oliver Jones on the Grammy award winning album Pleased to Meet You. She has also recorded with flutist Anne’s Drummond (Revolving) and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring’s (Uptown Shuffle).
Her first recording, Debut, earned her a 2008 JUNO Award for Traditional Jazz Album. Her second release, Second Side, was released in 2009 and featured vocalists guests Holly Cole and Ranee Lee. The album was chosen by the Globe and Mail as one of the ten best albums of 2009.
In 2013, Disterheft released Gratitude on Justin Time Records. The album features trumpeter Sean Jones, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, flutist Anne Drummond, pianist Renee Rosnes, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. In addition to composing a number of pieces and playing bass, Disterheft also contributes vocals to songs in English and French.
