AL STANWYCK (trumpeter. flugelhorn. trombonist. piccolo trumpet-player) was born on December 11. 1939 in Toronto. Ontario. Canada. He went to school in Barrie. Ontario where he was taught by W. A. Fisher. continuing his later studies in Toronto.

Stanwyck was just 18 when he went on the road with the great Lionel Hampton. He followed that with stints with The Glenn Miller Band (led by Ray McKinley) and Ralph Marterie before returning to Toronto to lead his own ‘Band With Impact’ in concerts and several radio and TV appearances. He became one of the busiest studio musicians in Toronto playing on literally thousands of commercials, on recordings, and in radio and television shows.

He played with Rob McConnell and ‘The Boss Brass’ for many years, and worked with dozens of the music world’s other legendaries including Buddy Rich, Charlie Mingus, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Nelson Riddle, Don Costa, and Maynard Ferguson. He played first trumpet with Paul Anka for four years, and on all of Don Costa’s New York recording sessions. He was invited on numerous occasions to tour with Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Quincy Jones but declined because of his heavy studio workload at home.

Al Stanwyck played with Memo Acevedo’s ‘Banda Brava’ during the “Sound of Toronto Jazz” Concert Series at the Ontario Science Centre on March 12. 1979. Retired from playing for many years, he currently divides his time between homes in Toronto and Florida.
