Q: “In high school was there a bit of a jazz ‘clique’ or something? Other high school kids you played with?”

A: “Yeah, me and my friends were all jazz fans, even the ones that didn't play instruments. I guess, from hanging around with us, musicians, they usually got to be fans, too, and we used to drive a couple of hours. We could drive up to Boston during the week and see a lot of people playing up there, and we'd make a trip to New York anytime we could scratch up enough money to get down there and see whoever or see whoever we could.”
