Q: “Was [Jelly Roll Morton] as much of a flamboyant character as we’ve read?”
A: “Well, yes, he was. But I think all the … the image that most people have of him was, well, he didn't deserve. Because I believe, I think, he is flamboyant and then they said he was mean and all that sort of thing. I think it was just, on his part, it was just ... all that was just because he figured he wasn't getting his just desserts. He wasn't getting what he deserved and I don't think he was either at that time because he used to write, write as much jazz as anybody in those days. He plays as much jazz piano as anybody in those days and sometimes it's frustrating, you know, when you can do all those things and not be recognized for it, and I think that was the thing with Darryl, not that he was mean and nasty or anything like that.”
