Q: “How is it do you think that you’ve gotten that New Orleans sound in the clarinet, or is all that bull? Is all that just bull that there are these regional differences and styles and all that?”

A: “Well, there is a difference. There is a definite difference. I mean, it doesn't really mean that you can tell geographically where a person would be from by the way he plays. Like in my case, I just happen to like that sort of playing. And to my mind, when I was a kid, just coming up, I thought that New Orleans clarinet players were the greatest thing ever that came down to Pike. Because there were a whole lot of clarinet players around New York and in Chicago area, but to my mind the jazz clarinet players from New Orleans, and that was it.”
