Q: “For somebody that is himself a composer, you really like playing standards. You find your own way to do it but…”

A: Roger Kellaway: “I do like playing standards. It's something that's extremely challenging and a lot of fun because for me the tune is familiar also. And so after playing something hundreds of times, there are a few tunes like 'Here's That Rainy Day' and a tune I just recently did on Stash Records with Red Mitchell, 'I'll Never Be The Same', that's sort of my new love.”
Interviewer: “Oh, yeah.”

Roger Kellaway: “Over and over and over and over again and always finding something new to play on it. But the idea of doing standards was a decision that I made because the label is small and I didn't know what kind of distribution it would get and I didn't want one of my originals on it. So we just decided to do standards. We did more than this and these were the ones that I like the best.”
