Q: “When was it that you started switching over to vibes more than xylophone?”

A: “Well, I always played vibes. When it first came out, I played ‘em with Victor Young on the strings, behind the strings, there was no pedal on them. I had to stop when I played the chord and then I had to stop them with my arms. And then, oh I guess, it was in 1930 or so, they added a pedal, which would stop the ringing.”
