Q: “You are becoming known as a piano player – maybe the same way Duke Ellington did, eh?”

A: “Yeah, it's funny how, you know, I always laugh at my first recording with Riverside Records, which was a duet with Bill Grauer and Orrin Keepnews who discovered my talent up in Lenox Mass. They wanted me to play piano solo. But I had been working with a trio, I didn't want to play piano solo. I said that's unthinkable, so we finally compromised on a bass, so about 22 years later, I end up playing solo piano.”
