Q: “With whom did you start to work?”
A: “Well, let's see. I had a ... there were some friends, people who were established in New York that I had known when they had been through Detroit or whom I had met earlier. Oscar Pedderford was one of the people who was most helpful to me when I first moved to New York. One great thing ever, jam sessions every Friday night at a loft in the East 23rd Street and Pedderford had a spare bass, which he kept there and it was like the invitation only, a very high-quality jam session. I don't know if they even exist anymore.”
